Project #2: Socially Responsible Packaging

We as students were brief-ed on this new project and we are required to present packaging design that should address a social issue.

I want my focus design to address people who have arthritis and I am interested in how they use their products and overcome packaging.

And I have no knowledge and experience on what it's like having that disease.
I have an understanding that there are different kinds of arthritis, and symptoms are different for anyone who suffer this disease.

And common symptoms and effects of arthritis are bone-joint pains, muscle-stiffness, inflammation, deformities and so on. I am looking for more information on the Arthritis Australia website.

So people with this health issue is suffering a lot of pain. And I wonder the products and packaging today, if they are an issue for these people.

In my imagination I believe they would have problems opening and accessing the content that is in a tightly-sealed or screwed packaging. Which may lead them to use tools to aid them in opening a packaging, and that would be (very) unnecessary for arthritis sufferers, as they would experience pains and fatigue while openning for say a peanut butter jar, a box-tinned biscuit or even their medications. And it could happen that they may not be able to use the product because they are unable to unseal or open the packaging.

So packaging products could provide difficulties for people who have arthritis.

Therefore, my project design will concentrate on arthritis people and their use of packaging-products in medication, oil, cream, lotion and gel.
