Wk 8 - PSS concept, reflection



Tutor's comment:-
The concept is an improvement from previous and is on the right path of progress. Though there is no incentive and as to why users will agree to help retain waste as nutrients to help grow the plant. There is clear need for unique solution and an innovation is required to push forward the idea. Look into the ecosystem of the slums and find out what they have at current - can they use local resource to build and develop a system and product.

Reflection:-
There is a need to look into other ways to use treat and use the excreta waste. Research into journal readings and discover available low cost techniques. Create a unique selling point in the toilet design, e.g. the product is accessible by young children - perhaps adjustable seat height in office chairs, spring mechanism. Refine a system to support the product or vice versa.

Project two: - Presentation. Research. Concepts













Concept - redesigning the toilet to be more accessible to other users, like small children and the elderly, by installing handle support bars, and automatic-slide-step-for-small-children.

Creating a positive experience for the user, by the body sensor will activate ventilation, switching on the light, and dispensing air-refreshener for odour control.

Using solar energy storing capability.


The issue of many people in developing countries don't have proper access to sanitation toilet. Releasing body waste to rivers, which are the only water source for drinking, will contaminate the water/river system, which generate harmful bacteria, and causing illness in people, especially children are the major fatal sufferers.

Tutor Scott - the solution is not cost-effective, not innovative as the proposed solutions are existing and are no original. Look at existing designs and solutions, created a better product to this. Product will also need a system, so create sustainable system for the product. Look into the local ecosystem, such as India, what do they have, that can be sourced and locally generate the system and product.

Reflection
- required a sustainable system for the product. Concept should focus on a particular issue, e.g. safety and privacy for women; toilet availability; waste disposal system; waste conversion to fertiliser.

Wk 5 - Product Lifecycle assessment+Product disassembly
















Interesting how this product uses various type of plastics. It is surprising to find not all are made of one kind of plastics. I think many designs and products would be more sustainable when they use one to two different materials. But for this product it uses steel for aesthetic and fastening joints, ABS for stronger robust build, PC for wall thickness and aesthetic, PE for functioning handheld parts, SAN for transparent quality.

It puts me to think of using materials and fastening joints more efficiently such as reduce the amount of screw and bolts fastenings, e.g. the efficient design would be to use mechanical snap fits and slots.

Wk4, Prefinal + Week 4 consultation reflection, no.4

First question to Cormack, was about the wall thickness of the container, and the wall thickness should ideally be uniform. Second question, was PET material suitable for this design, and PET would be crushed (deform) under mechanical stress, e.g. PET soft drink bottles can be crushed. Third question, if the squeeze design possible, and the design may need a spring mechanism or something that will assist the container retain original form after the squeeze pressure.

Tutor - There is need of little tweek in the ergonomics for the container to fit comfortably for the hand. The base cap may need to be wider/bigger surface to able to stand upright on the enclosure. Poster can be improved by showing context of use, such as illustrated hands. Show more sectional drawings on CAD.

Focus Group - Poster needs context, such an image of a toast with honey dispensed from the container. 
Graphics and embossed features on the container can improve the visual and aesthetic of the product, e.g. have hexagon-geometry to represent honey-comb. The title/name of the product can be changed and be more related to the squeezing function.

Week 3 consultation reflection, no.2

Tutor Tom - Test the squeeze function by generating a plastic model. There is sometimes the honey would not dispense and the build up pressure in the silicone valve would blow a big blob of honey. Search up what material and process for the design. Design the enclosure, and test the design with appropriate materials. Find out what is wrong with existing packaging for honey.

Peer 1, Christine - There are laminated material used in tube packaging that eases the dispense of the last-few contents, which would have been difficult in other plastic packaging.

Peer 2, Clement - The grip comfort is alright on the mock-up model, but it needs more ergonomic design for the hand palm and the thumb. Adjusting the edges and the side curves of the bottle would help create more comfort and secure grip for the user.

Other tutor, Mar to another student - Conduct experiments of upside down containers that are in the market, and investigate this feature with the proposed food product. Understand the nature, e.g. viscosity of the oil, and observe the result. Consider the use of the packaging design, such as hygiene, user interaction, packaging seal, graphics and labelling.

Reflection, This week, I plan to generate a model of the bottle design with vacuum form PETG sheets, to try the squeeze action with actual honey content. I hope to have the result and make it a convincing evidence of the primary research. Also to do testing of the enclosure fitting in relation with the squeeze plastic. Research into what materials and process to is appropriated for the design. Discover a way to get the last contents without the objective of minimal frustration and exclude the use of tool. Test the valve, and consider the pressured honey-blob dispense. Begin CAD drawing on solidworks and presentation posters.
